Speed Up Ubuntu (11.10) Desktop

My biggest issue with Ubuntu is that it’s very slow; you click on an icon or menu and there is a 5+ second lag time before it process my request.  I admit, I don’t have the fastest computer but I thought Linux is known for running on very little memory and processor speed without even blinking an eye.  Any case, I’m a newb when it comes to Linux.  I’ve done some research (Google) and looks like changing the “swappiness” value from default of 60 to 10 have been one of the many tweaks that can be done to get you in the right direction of speeding up Ubuntu.  The following are steps on how to do that.  Make sure to reboot once editing of this file is completed and saved.
