As you’re aware of at this point when you install Ubuntu Server, the environment is all command line.  As an Ubuntu novice like myself, one will need the GUI/Desktop to familiarize oneself with the directory structure.  But too excited to spend hours learning and familiarizing oneself to where all the directories are located from the command line.  Plus I feel that I learn faster if I have the GUI environment handy in case I get stuck trying to run a command.  The following is 2 easy steps to install this Ubuntu server GUI.

1. From the Ubuntu server command line environment, chose from the following desktop environment:
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
sudo apt-get install –no-install-recommends ubuntu-desktop …lite version
sudo apt-get install lxde-core  (this is lite ver. of lxde)
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop …kubuntu
